By 1988, anyone could request a global passport in Hungary. The borders were open, but train and bus tickets were very expensive. What’s the use of freedom if you cannot take advantage of it? Ákos, Laci and Petya, three good friends yearning to travel to Western Europe, figure out how to forge train tickets with the help of Pelikan Blue carbon paper. They start their chemistry experiments in a Budapest flat so that they can travel…
László Csáki’s first feature film, Pelikan Blue—the very first animated documentary feature made in Hungary—takes us on a truly nostalgic journey. The film recounts real events using contemporary music and a lot of humour.
The exhibition presents the sketches made during pre-production and the production phase of the film, various storyboard and animatic versions, character designs, Super-8 recordings, cut sequences, behind-the-scenes photos and film, fan art, poster designs, merchandise, as well as many personal souvenirs, items and props that were used to create the hybrid visual world of the film that edges between animation and reality.
