ANIMATION ECOSYSTEM – BUT HOW DO WE SUSTAIN IT?

We have come a long way in the past three years since founding AA1, yet our goal remains unchanged: to support Hungarian animation artists and the development of the industry by building a thriving community in which we can share our values and knowledge.

In 2024, in collaboration with the National Film Institute (NFI), the Hungarian Animation Producers’ Association (HAPA), and Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, we organised a series of negotiations to develop the NFI’s new animation strategy and prepare an action plan. Our advocacy efforts and feedback to the NFI have already yielded tangible results. Thanks to these discussions, the NFI has recognised and accepted that, for the long-term sustainability of animated film production, the funding system must allow for higher per-minute budgets. As a result, projects with higher per-minute costs have recently received support, though applicants, too, must take a more conscious approach when preparing their budgets. Additionally, as part of the NFI’s commitment to greater diversity in the funding system, Anna Ida Orosz, elected and delegated by AA1 and HAPA members, has joined the NFI’s committee for selecting animated productions for funding.

Over the past few years, we have hosted various professional events, including talks with animated film directors, showcases of emerging animation studios, and we have been active participants in organising the Tribute to Hungarian Animation Programme of Annecy 2025. Additionally, we have begun applying for funding to support the association’s initiatives. Currently, 68 members represent our association, but applications are open to all Hungarian animation creators.
