Tamás Gergely Kucsera

Philosopher, art theory writer, filmmaker, university professor, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, rector of Budapest Metropolitan University. He was born in Budapest in 1976. In Hungary he earned degrees in Philosophy, Teaching, Sociology, and Economy (MBA). Through his studies in France, Germany and Italy, he obtained an international expert certificate. Later he acquired doctoral degrees in Philosophy and Political Science, and became a habilitated doctor in the field of Art. He worked as the chief counsellor to the president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From 2011, he was the general secretary of the Hungarian Academy of Arts for a decade. From 2013 to 2021, he was the co-editor-in-chief of the periodical Magyar Művészet (“Hungarian Art”), and from November 2021 to February 2025, he was the chief counsellor to the governor of the Central Bank of Hungary. With a history of teaching and researching for more than a quarter of a century, he is currently a professor at Széchenyi István University, Budapest Metropolitan University and Károli Gáspár Reformed University, as well as an honorary professor at the University of Pécs, and a research professor at the Hungarian Dance University. Since 2018, he has also been the editor-in-chief of Valóság (“Reality”) journal, and he chairs the National Film Institute’s committee for selecting documentary and educational films. His most significant honours include the Flórián Kováts Memorial Medal of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, the Miklós Bánffy Award, which is awarded by the minister responsible for culture, and the Knight’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit.
