József Szurcsik

Born in 1959 in Budapest, he graduated with a degree in Graphic Art from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 1985. He works across multiple disciplines of fine art, creating unique graphic art and graphic art by printmaking, paintings, 3D canvases, wood and steel sculptures and installations. He also designs book and record covers, and stage sets, and illustrates literary works. He is a creator and participant in performances and art-music groups. He has developed a uniquely surreal artistic world. While rooted in classical traditions, his works often carry a critical and sometimes ironic tone. His surrealistic imagery reveals the absurdity of life, forming a rich system full of meanings open to interpretation. Exhibiting both in Hungary and internationally, he has showcased his work in solo exhibitions in Sofia, Helsinki and New York among other cities. His works can be found in many Hungarian public and private collections. He has also been involved in tertiary art education for many years. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Munkácsy Award and was honoured as a Merited Artist of Hungary.
